Centella & It’s Uses in Modern Herbal Skin Care

What is Centella?
Centella is a small herbaceous annual plant found around South East Asia & is used as a culinary leaf & as a medicinal herb in modern herbal skin care products.
It has long-stalked, green, kidney shaped leaves & the flowers are pinkish to red in color, born in small, rounded bunches (umbels) near the surface of the soil.

Culinary uses
Centella is used as a leafy green in Sri Lankan cuisine, where it is called Gotu Kola.
In Thailand the Centella leaf (ใบบัวบก) is used for preparing a drink or can be eaten in raw form in salads or cold rolls. In Bangkok, vendors in the famous Jatujak Market sell it alongside coconut, Roselle, chrysanthemum, orange and other health drinks.

Centella in herbal skin care.

Why is Centella used in skin care I hear you say?  Well the short answer is that Centella aids in healing and regeneration of the skin. It boosts collagen production and maximizes circulation. It has great anti-bacterial, anti aging, anti-psoriatic and wound-healing properties.

Now here goes with the long answer-
Perhaps the best known benefit of Centella is its ability to improve symptoms of varicose veins. Centella helps in strengthening the capillaries and veins and assists with better blood circulation.
Recent trials have confirmed its ability to relieve symptoms of poor circulation in the veins of the legs. The herb has been used successfully to reduce symptoms of varicose veins, as well as leg cramps, swelling of the legs, and "heaviness" or tingling in the legs.
Centella supports circulatory system: improves brain and peripheral circulation, helps to lower intracranial pressure, and normalize high blood pressure. It also has mild diuretic properties.

Centella is an ideal tonic for the elderly people, who are more likely to have problems with weakened blood vessels, particularly their veins. Also, it may take longer for their skin to heal after cuts, scratches, bruises, or similar injuries.
Additionally Centella is a great herb to be used in face cream for acne prone skin because of its therapeutic properties in healing of the skin.
Lastly scientific evidence confirms the energetic constituents in Centella extract, boosts the skin cell replacement as well as development of collagen and thickening of the epidermis (a good anti-aging property – as we age our skins turn out to be thinner) and enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, both of which are important for anti-aging processes to maintain even, toned and vibrant looking skin.
