Melasma-The Causes & Ways to Limit its Effect

Something that people suffering from Melasma are often wondering about is what causes this skin condition in the first place. Melasma is something that is almost exclusive to women, especially women who are of a culture with a darker skin. Hormonal changes, such those that happen with pregnancy, could also be a significant factor.

Another possible cause of Melasma is excessive exposure to the sun. When the woman is exposed to the sun for long periods of time, then that can trigger an excess production of melanin. Melanin is what the skin produces in order to protect itself.

Is there a Cure?

There is no one cure for this kind of skin condition. Sometimes the condition will disappear on its own. Of course, it is also important to wear an SPF of 30 or more to avoid dangerous sun exposure.

Can Melasma be prevented?

It really is not possible to prevent Melasma but there are a couple of things which you can try to limit your chances of getting the condition.

One of these preventative measures is to limit sun exposure.  As the Melanocytes are what mainly causes the condition, limiting the amount of time you spend in the sun can really help to keep this condition in check. Always wear sun protection when you do go out and wear a sun hat to keep the sun’s rays out of your face.

However, even if you do cover up in the sun and wear sunscreen, it will still not completely prevent you from developing the condition. You can only really treat the condition once you have it.

Another thing that should be noted is not to use skin lighteners or bleaching creams containing steroids. These can cause permanent skin damage including permanent redness, thinning and blood vessel streaks. Also avoid skin lighteners or bleaching creams containing mercury as this is a poison.

Lastly avoid irritating the facial skin. Do not use strong soaps or abrasive cleaners but only a mild soap or cleanser for washing.

What are recommended Malasma Prevention Creams?

As has already been mentioned in this blog, the most important factoring preventing the development as well as worsening of melasma is appropriate facial sun protection with broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVA and UVB) as well as avoidance of tanning beds. This point cannot be overemphasized.

Honey -Natures Gold

Honey is now a popular ingredient for both medical and beauty purposes. Rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids, honey has excellent healing capabilities when used on the skin or hair.

All types of honey contain antioxidants and antibacterial properties. The healing properties in honey are more stable and are not broken down by enzymes on or in the body unlike synthetic skin & hair formulas.

Honey Hair Care

You like honey in your tea and on your toast, but have you ever thought of putting honey in your hair? You should! Honey not only adds shine, but it also naturally attracts moisture.

Honey for hair has been used for ages to treat hair loss, itching and even scaling. This is because honey is known to have antifungal, anti bacterial and antioxidant properties besides a high nutrient value. One of the honey hair benefits is that its gives hair a natural shine and also promotes hair growth.
Honey is also used in natural conditioner as it is able to tame frizzy and dry hair as it does not cause build up and does not contain any harmful chemicals.

Honey for Skin

Honey’s natural antioxidant and anti-microbial properties help to protect the skin from the damage of the sun’s rays, supports the skin’s ability to rejuvenate and refresh depleted skin, leaving it feeling silky soft and supple. One of the most common natural skin care benefits with honey is related to treatment of minor acne, acne which could be caused by hormonal changes or "heartiness in the body", as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) would refer to it as the imbalance of yin and yang in the body. Honey absorbs impurities from the pores on the skin, making it an ideal cleansing agent.
